The quick answer
Mesh tells a buyer whether particles pass through a particular sieve. Micron is a unit of length. D10, D50 and D90 describe the distribution measured across the powder. These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Two barite powders sold under the same mesh name can contain different amounts of fine and coarse particles. For a sensitive coating, plastic or masterbatch, a particle-size distribution is normally more useful than one mesh number.
What do mesh and micron mean?
Mesh
Mesh is linked to a sieve opening. A higher mesh number generally means a finer sieve, but the exact opening depends on the sieve standard. “325 mesh” is therefore not a complete specification unless the standard and residue limit are also stated.
Micron
One micron, written as 1 µm, is one thousandth of a millimetre. Micron values are useful for fine and micronized industrial barite. A direct mesh-to-micron conversion is only an approximation because a sieve result and a particle-size distribution are measured differently.
For a direct comparison of common commercial names, read Barite 200 Mesh vs 325 Mesh.
D10, D50 and D90 in simple language
| Value | Simple meaning | Why a buyer checks it |
|---|---|---|
| D10 | 10% of the measured particles are smaller than this size. | Shows the very fine part of the powder. |
| D50 | 50% are smaller and 50% are larger. It is the median size. | Gives a central reference for the distribution. |
| D90 | 90% are smaller; the remaining 10% are larger. | Helps reveal the coarse side and possible top-cut risk. |
A low D50 does not guarantee the absence of coarse particles. D90, D98 or a sieve-residue result may be important when surface finish, filtration or screen blockage matters.
Results can also change with the measuring instrument, dispersion medium and sample preparation. The purchase specification should name the agreed method.
What does “2-micron premium white barite” mean?
The current KANIPER Premium White Barite data lists an average particle size of 2 µm. Its published distribution also reports 99.95% below 8 µm and 85% below 2 µm.
These statements describe different aspects of the powder. “Average particle size” should not automatically be renamed D50. A buyer should use the exact wording and method shown in the current TDS. The high share below 2 µm shows that this is a fine micronized grade intended for applications where whiteness, smooth finish and controlled dispersion matter.
For applications that do not need the premium size and whiteness profile, buyers can review KANIPER Industrial White Barite. Drilling buyers should instead focus on the particle-size limits and test methods required by the applicable drilling specification for API Barite.
How particle size changes the buying decision
| Application | Size information to request | Main practical concern |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling fluid | Specified sieve residue and fine-particle limits | Compliance and mud-system performance |
| Paint and coating | D50, upper-size value, coarse residue and method | Dispersion, surface finish and settling |
| Plastic and masterbatch | Full distribution and top cut | Dispersion, processing and appearance |
| Rubber and friction material | Agreed distribution or sieve limits | Mixing consistency and final compound behaviour |
Simple buyer checklist
- State the final application before choosing a particle size.
- Ask whether the number is mesh, micron, average size, D50 or another percentile.
- Request the sieve or instrumental test method.
- Check D90, D98 or coarse residue when large particles can cause defects.
- Do not assume that two “325 mesh” products have the same distribution.
- Compare the TDS with a shipment COA and test a representative sample.
- Record the approved method and limits in the purchase order.
